Foreign travel and connecting flights are not the most pleasant of experiences. It is fine in case of short layovers, but if there are longer ones, it is surely not a great experience. But actually there are things you can do to make these sometimes, annoying layovers into the best part of your journey.
Yeah, have you ever wondered about the things that you can engage in at an airport during a layover? Shopping, sleeping, sightseeing, savouring some airport cuisine… the possibilities are many.
8 Things to do in case of an Airport Layover:
So, here are the things to do in case of you have a longish… Airport Layover.
1. Shopping: Duty Free Shopping/Airport Shopping
First thing that strikes us during an airport layover is shopping. There are a number of outlets at every airport where you can shop. The best outlets to shop at an airport are the outlets that sell duty free products. These products are cheaper than the rest as they are sold without the custom duty tax. Also while the duty paid shops have great products, it is often the price that would deter most of the travellers. We recommend duty free shopping to be a better bet!
Now if you are on the way for some duty free shopping, make it a point, you do not pay more for the duty free product. Different stores have different duty free prices. So to ensure that you get the best deal out there, you need to compare the prices between your layover airport, destination airport/arrival airports.
Just select your airports and the products you would like to buy and you will be able to see the prices for them and see how much one airport is cheaper than the other, thus helping you make a good buying decision.

2. Work Out or Rejuvinate
It is not as crazy as it sounds, believe us! Some airports have a specific fitness areas where in you can spread your yoga mat and have a few minutes of deep breathing and stretching. For instance, San Francisco International Airport has two free of cost fitness areas in Terminals 2 and 3. Also, the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport offers a centre for meditation that is available to everyone free of cost.
Then there are also spas which you can access, like the ones at Changi airport for instance. You can find out more about them here.
So, no matter which airport you are at, there will be some sort of recreational amenity there for you. Speak to the people at the information desk and they would be more than happy to help you out.
3. Go Sightseeing
If you have enough time, you can go sightseeing and have a couple of hours of fun and amusement. Some airports offer fast and affordable transportation to the nearby cities and are therefore the best option for an airport layover adventure. Spend half of your day exploring and enjoy!
Do check this up with your airline beforehand. A lot of them offer such services when they have long layovers.
4. Play Board Games
Playing board games is a fun way of passing your airport layover time. Carry some games with you and play them at the airport with your companion(s) or some friendly passengers. Don’t stick to mobile gaming, interact with a real human being and have fun… For all you know this might just be a great networking exercise.
Somewhat clichéd, but who doesn’t like to catch some extra hours of rest? Pick a comfortable spot and recharge for the trip ahead. Also, there are many airports having designated sleeping sections or special sleep chairs that will help you catch some Zzzs.
6. Eat to your hearts content at some of the Awesome Airport Restaurants
Yes, airports happen to have some of the most awesome gems when it comes to satisfying your hunger pangs or just the “feeling hungry for no-reason” sorta feeling. While we do have a recommendation of 7 airport restaurants you should try, but if you are at an airport which doesn’t have any of these, there are always some great places to eat. So explore and satiate the famished belly of yours 🙂
This one is for all the workaholics out there who can’t waste a minute of their time. Get your laptop out and start working for that big presentation that you’re supposed to give once you reach your destination. If you’ve got extra time, what could be better than spending it in a productive way? Yeah, do we need to even mention the 3 magic words – Free Airport WiFi… you get the point!
8. Try a Lodging – If permitted!
If your stay on the airport is a long one, it is a good idea to try for some nearby lodgings so that you can relax and freshen up before boarding the next flight. It may cost lesser than you expect and will be a nice place if you wish to spend some time in privacy!
This would depend if you are able to get the required permissions to go out of the airport terminal. Some countries may allow for it, and some airlines too make prior arrangements for the same. However you need to check with the airline beforehand.
We hope you enjoy your layover time at the airport with the activities listed above.
Have a safe flight and a fun- filled airport stay!
