Technically, Duty or Customs Duty is a kind of tax levied on imports or exports. Any product that is being carried out of a country has to be cleared of all taxes which includes the Customs Duty. However in case of retail products bought from Duty free shops, the government does not charge any Duty as these products are available at the exit points of a country. These are hence these products have come to be known as Duty Free.
However, if you are thinking that once you buy a product Duty free, you do not pay any tax at all think again.
Duty Free does not possibly mean exempted from all taxes applicable. It merely means being exempt from Customs Duty. More commonly products do have other taxes such as Value Added Tax and all levied on them. You may have to pay all these other taxes even if you manage to get your hands on Duty Free Products.
